Everyone thinks their own thumbnail is legible
You designed your thumbnail at full size on a large monitor, knowing exactly what it depicts. Your audience sees it about two centimetres wide, in a grid of competing images, while scrolling, having never encountered your video before. Those two experiences have almost nothing in common, and the gap between them is where most thumbnails quietly fail.
This tool exists to close that gap. It scores an uploaded thumbnail across a defined rubric, shows you exactly how it renders at real feed sizes, points at specific structural problems, and can generate a redesign that addresses them.
What gets measured, and how the score is assembled
The scoring is not a single vague impression from a model. It is a rubric with published anchors and a server-side formula.
Intrigue is scored separately from image quality
A thumbnail can be technically excellent and completely uninteresting. Intrigue is measured on its own axis — how intriguing, enigmatic, provocative, and ominous the image is — alongside objective properties like contrast, colour saturation, and brightness scored from zero to one hundred.
The model is forbidden from writing the overall score
The vision model reports dimensions only; the composite is computed on the server from a fixed weighting. Faceless thumbnails are scored on a redistributed formula rather than penalised for having no face — many strong thumbnails have no person in them at all.
The squint test involves no AI at all
Your image is simply rendered at the three sizes it will genuinely appear at: the mobile feed, the desktop sidebar, and the search and home grid. There is no model in this step and nothing to disbelieve — you are looking at your own thumbnail at the size your audience gets. It is the single most useful panel on the page, and it is usually uncomfortable.
How to read the score honestly
Score-based tools invite over-interpretation, so here is the calibration you should apply.
- The score is a comparative craft signal, not a predicted click-through rate. It is useful for ranking two of your own thumbnails against each other and for tracking whether a redesign improved things. It is not a percentage, and it does not forecast real-world CTR — nothing that has never been shown to an audience can do that.
- Real click-through rate depends on your title, your thumbnail, the competing thumbnails beside it, and who is being shown it. Only one of those four is visible to this tool.
- Different runs can be scored by different model tiers depending on load, which introduces some variation. Compare thumbnails within a single session rather than against a number you recorded last week.
- The redesign is generated from a written description of your thumbnail, not from your image itself — a deliberate choice, because feeding the original in made the model draw new text on top of the old text. The practical consequence is that a redesign will not preserve your face, your product, or your exact subject. Treat the written brief as the deliverable and the images as visual direction.
- Generated text can still be misspelled, since the image model draws letters as pixels.
- Analysis is inexpensive and the AI redesign costs considerably more, because generating images is a fundamentally more expensive operation than describing one.

Getting real value out of it
- Add your video title. Half the rubric is about whether the image creates a curiosity gap with the title, and the tool flags on-image text that merely repeats it.
- Analyse a competitor's thumbnail to get a structured account of why it works, rather than a vague sense that it does.
- Score two candidate designs and pick the higher one — relative comparison is what the score is genuinely good for.
- Read the flaw list before the score. The named structural problems are more actionable than the number.
- Take the directives into the Thumbnail Generator for a full redesign, or into the video diagnostic if you are trying to work out whether the thumbnail is even the real problem.
Thumbnail scoring questions
Can I analyze a competitor's thumbnail?
Yes. Upload any public thumbnail to reverse-engineer what makes it click — then apply the same principles to yours.
What does the CTR score mean?
It's an AI estimate (0–100) of click-through potential based on clarity, contrast, focal point, emotion, color, curiosity, and title fit — not a guarantee of real CTR.
Why does it show my thumbnail at tiny sizes?
Most viewers see thumbnails small on mobile. The squint-test shows how legible yours is in-feed — the #1 reason thumbnails fail.
Does the one-click fix change my face?
The AI redesign is creative direction and may alter faces or details. Use the written brief as the source of truth and the generated images as inspiration.
Is the analyzer free?
Analyzing is low-credit and available to free users; the AI image redesign costs more credits because image generation is expensive.
