A small tool with one job
Most of the tools on this site form an opinion about your channel. This one does not. You give it a YouTube URL and it hands back the video's thumbnail at the best resolution available, its tag list where the uploader left tags public, and its metadata — title, description, statistics, and true runtime. That is the entire product.
It exists because studying what works is a real part of the job, and doing it manually means digging through page source for a thumbnail URL and guessing at tags. This turns a five-minute annoyance into one paste.
What one request actually does
A single call to YouTube's official Data API
The video ID is extracted from whatever URL form you paste — standard watch links, short links, and Shorts URLs all resolve — and one request retrieves the snippet, statistics, and content details for that video. Nothing is scraped and nothing is obtained through a back door; this is the same public interface YouTube offers to any developer.
Thumbnails are served at the highest tier the uploader provided
YouTube generates several thumbnail sizes per video but only stores the largest tiers when the uploader supplied a high-resolution image. The grabber requests the best available and falls back down the ladder, which is why some older or lower-effort uploads return a smaller image than others. That is a property of the source video, not of the tool.
Tags are returned only when they are public
Tags live in the snippet and are visible through the API when the uploader has not restricted them. When they are hidden you get nothing rather than a fabrication — if you want an inferred tag list for a channel that hides theirs, that is what the Competitor Spy tool does, and it labels those tags as inferred.
Read this before you use anything you download
This is the tool where the caveats are less about accuracy and more about what you do next.
- A downloaded thumbnail is someone else's copyrighted artwork. Use it as reference and study — composition, contrast, where the face sits, how much text there is — and do not re-upload it to your own channel.
- Private and unlisted videos are inaccessible. The public API does not expose them, so no amount of URL manipulation will retrieve them here.
- Resolution is capped by what the uploader supplied. You cannot get a 1280×720 image out of a video that was only ever given a small one.
- One video per request. This is not a bulk scraping endpoint and is not intended to become one.
- A missing tag list means the uploader hid it, not that the video has no tags. Absence of data is not data.

How to actually study a thumbnail once you have it
Stop looking at it as a picture and start looking at it as a set of decisions. Shrink it to roughly the width of a thumbnail on a phone — the detail disappears and only the structure survives, which is the information you want. Then ask four questions. How many things compete for attention? Where is the brightest point, and is it where the meaning lives? How many words are on it, and can you still read them at that size? What single emotion is on the face, if there is one? High performers are usually one subject, one focal point, three or four words, one unambiguous emotion.
Tags reward a similar discipline. Read them for phrasing rather than copying the list — the ordering reveals which term the uploader considered primary, and the long-tail entries expose the queries they were intercepting.
